The Best Thing

I attended a wedding over the weekend. I had known the charming, young couple for quite some time.

Steve and Amy met six years ago in college. He was never really the marrying kind.  Steve always drank, smoked pot and partied.  He was anything but responsible. He never worked hard, and went from one job to another.  He was never passionate or dedicated to anything. Somehow, all that changed when Steve and Amy became a couple.

Amy helped Steve articulate his dreams, set goals, and they both grew and matured together. She helped him financially through school and paid most of the bills while they rented their apartment.  She believed in him. He was everything he was because of her faith, her love and her devotion.

At the wedding reception, Steve's proud mother said to me, “Amy is the best thing that ever happened to my son. I thought of that as I continued to watch the dynamic couple celebrate their wedding. I gazed at them joyously dancing and passionately kissing. It reminded me of the time my ex's mother told him “Laura's the best thing that ever happened to you". I then realized my ex never told me I was the best thing that ever happened to him. I don’t think he believed that. In fact, I doubt now he’d consider me in his top 20.  I'm sure he believed HE was the best thing that ever happened to him! If I'm going to be honest with myself however, the truth is I never believed he was the best thing to ever happen to me.

I wanted to be able to feel and say that...but in that relationship, as with all the others, it never became a reality.  I was forcing it and me. There is no amount of love you can give to someone...if they don't love themselves they will never understand how to accept and receive love. Loving them more will push them further away and you will be left holding the bag of broken dreams.

When you're dating, it’s hard to know if the person you’re getting to know will be the best thing that ever happened to you or not. But if you start to see signs that he’s not even in the ball park, walk away...don't waste your time. Wait for the right person that will make you feel desired, loved, appreciated and supported. It's amazing to know that someone is thinking about you, talking about you, dreaming of your future together.

Hearing “You are the best thing that ever happened to me” — definitely sounds better than something as ambiguous and vanilla as “I love you”. Always remember though, that with anything, the best way to convey any sentiment is through actions. Let your actions show that the person is at the center of your life and it will mean more than words ever can.

Cheers to Steve and Amy!
